Coober Pedy

We left Coober Pedy with little in the way of regrets. The place is half underground and is dry and dusty. If it wasn't for something called opals the place just wouldn't exist as there is stuff all there apart from examples of human ingenuity.

We drove on through a pretty desolate landscape, stopping every now and then at rest areas for a coffee and a stretch, until we hit a place called Bon Bon - a rest stop like the others apart from the fact that:
1) It had water!
2) It had toilets (yay for SA - at last!)
3) It had flocks of finches with orange beaks and small zebra stripes at the ends of their wings.

Yeah - I fell in love with the finches!

And let's face it, who wouldn't? The water container was dry so I filled it for them and they just flocked back for a drink.

Love 'em.

Soon after that, and after our lunch stop, we moved into slightly different country and we started seeing both emus (always a male and a small flock of half grown chicks) and the odd wedge tailed eagle. Magnificent birds, both of them and it is great to see them.

After that we started seeing salt lakes - Lake Hart was the first, but there were a string of them all the way through pretty much until we hit Port Augusta. Funny things to see, but brilliant white landscapes.

Right now we are enjoying a beer in Port Augusta - a fun place!

  1. The worst part of the trip is through Alice to Port Augusta! I was in Coober Pedy on the 29th of Jan. It's soooo hot and dry, but it has to be seen. Just missed you guys. Hope you're both doing well. xxx Love this blog :) Ameena
