Launceston

Well Launceston was a treat, apart from the chilly first night that is.

I have already mentioned the beauty of the city, we were most impressed. However, we ended up even more impressed after visiting the Launie (yep - we are picking up the language!) food and wine festival.

This was held in the park and it was an eye opener for all sorts of reasons.

As you can see - it was table service too!

Seriously though, we had a ball there and the wine (and cheeses and beers and whisky) were first class every time. Even the entertainment was spot on. If anyone gets the chance to see a band called The Remains then they should grab the chance.

As well as the visit to the festival we also spent some time wandering around Cataract Gorge.

We (all four of us, Karen and me with my brother Jim and his wife Sandie) walked down from the car park and this was the first view we had of the basin at the centre of the Gorge.

You can see the old suspension bridge in the background, the pool in the middle ground and the swimming pools in the foreground. Magic facilities are supplied too.

The view up the gorge from the suspension bridge shows a calm creek, but it turns into a torrent when it rains.

The bridge runs over a weir. I believe the rocks were left there after the last torrent - it must be a powerful force.

It is a lovely place and with some interesting things to see and do.

These included a walk through the Kings Park - right next to the Tamar River, it is a very English place with lots of oak, elm and horse chestnut trees.

The Kings Park? Well here he is! The statue was dedicated by Baden Powell too. I never knew he came down under.

Nobody who knows us will be surprised to learn we finished the afternoon with a beer.  :)  This is a local "Moo Brew" and it was as delicious as the sunshine.
